ARTIFICIAL DISC REPLACEMENT
WHAT IS ADR?
ARTIFICIAL DISC
REPLACEMENT SURGERY
Artificial disc replacement surgery (ADR) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that helps eliminate pain and preserve or restore motion in the spine. By removing a damaged, degenerated or diseased spinal disc and replacing it with an artificial one, ADR has helped countless patients revitalize their lives.
With this procedure, our goal is to relieve pain in the spine while also preserving the spine’s natural movement, restoring your quality of life.
During an artificial disc replacement procedure, your surgeon will remove the diseased or degenerated disc and replace it with an artificial one. The type of disc used during this surgery depends on your condition, the extent of damage to your natural disc, and whether your neck or low back is affected. K. Brandon Strenge, M.D. works with his patients to determine what course of treatment is best for them based on their unique situation.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING
ADR SURGERY?
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR ADR?
ADR can mitigate pain, discomfort and loss of mobility caused by a degenerative disc, but not everyone is a candidate for this spinal surgery. Before you pursue ADR, ask your doctor about more conservative treatments first, such as: medication, epidurals, physical therapy, hot/cold therapies or other modalities. Your age, medical history, and lifestyle may play a role in whether or not ADR is the right treatment for you.
BENEFITS OF ADR
ADR surgery offers patients several benefits. As a minimally invasive procedure, ADR surgery can be performed in an outpatient setting, with faster recovery times. ADR surgery also allows patients to maintain the natural movement of the spine while still reducing pain and daily discomfort.
ADR discs are designed to last a lifetime, and revision surgeries are uncommon. By retaining motion in their spine, patients are able to live with a high quality of life, uninhibited by pain.
There are two types of ADR surgery that can be performed:
Benefits of ADR
TYPES OF ADR
CERVICAL DISC REPLACEMENT
Cervical artificial disc replacement targets the cervical region of the spine, including the neck and upper back. By replacing a damaged disc, patients have less pain and retain motion in their head and neck.
LUMBAR DISC REPLACEMENT
Lumbar Disc Replacement removes a damaged disc from the lumbar region of the spine, in the lower back. This surgery helps restore movement and improve function, enhancing mobility and quality of life.
